Biography of Franklin Delano Roosevelt by Pauline, Etienne and Florent


Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born on the 30th of January 1882 in Hyde Park, a town about 160 kilometres north of New York.
He is the only son of James Roosevelt Sr. and Sara Ann Delano, descendants of the Mayflower passengers.
He was highly educated, learned German and French, and practiced many sports like polo, rowing, tennis and shooting.
In 1899, went to Harvard University.
In 1900, his father died.
Soon after, his uncle, Theodore Roosevelt, became President of the USA.
He was Franklin’s political model.
In 1902, during a reception at the White House, he met his future wife Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, a distant cousin.
Despite opposition, they married in 1905.
They had six children.
In 1908, Roosevelt became part of a prestigious business firm on Wall Street.
In 1913, he was appointed Assistant Secretary of the US Navy by President Woodrow Wilson.
In 1920, the National Convention of the Democratic Party chose him as candidate for vice-presidency of the USA, along with James M. Cox.
After a fall, he contracted a disease that paralysed his lower limbs, and retired temporarily from politics.
To be elected, he hid his disability.
He became Governor of the State of New York in 1928.
In 1933, Roosevelt was elected President of the USA.
He had to take over a country severely affected by the economic crisis of 1929.
He created a program of emergency measures called the “New Deal”.
Criticised by fellow politicians but supported by the people, Roosevelt tried to improve the situation of the USA up to the war.
Elected again in 1936, 1940 and 1944, he died in 1945 of a cerebral haemorrhage.
Roosevelt was a very important politician for the USA but he was also a world leader, largely contributing to the Allies’ victory.
